Man spared jail after headbutt in Grantham town centre

A VIOLENT attack in Grantham town centre left a man with a broken nose, Lincoln Crown Court heard.

Carl Draycott, 23, must pay £1,500 in compensation to the victim after he admitted headbutting the man while on a night out in Grantham.

The court heard how trouble broke out after the pair met “face to face” in a late night pizza shop.

Andrew Scott, prosecuting, said Draycott headbutted the victim after he was accused of stealing money from a friend.

Mr Scott told the court Draycott continued to attack the victim after they moved outside into the street - punching him twice.

“At no time did the victim offer any violence,” Mr Scott added.

Chris Milligan, mitigating, said there had been a degree of verbal provocation but Mr Draycott now accepted he had taken things too far.

“He now realises what he did was wrong and is sorry for the injury he caused,” Mr Milligan added.

Draycott, of Heathfield Road, Grantham, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years and must also obey a 7pm to 6am nightly curfew for six months.

Draycott was also placed under the supervision of a probation officer for two years and must pay £1,500 compensation to the victim and £400 prosecution costs.

Passing sentence Recorder Simon Ward told Draycott: “This is no soft option.”
