On September 30 1989 firefighter Colin Walton and his wife Marti joined colleagues and their partners for a meal at The George Hotel on its last night.
The couple were regular diners at the hotel’s restaurant and on hearing that it was closing they decided to have a final get together.
They have kept the menu from the final night which was created especially for the occasion and included named dishes ‘Roulade of Chicken Margaret Thatcher’ and ‘Tournedos Nicholas Nickleby’ in honour of the hotel being mentioned in Dickens’ novel.
Colin and Marti have even kept the bill but remember that they also received a free round of drinks.
The picture is taken outside the front of the hotel with its original spinning door, a feature the couple say they miss from the George Centre.
