A busy road in Grantham town centre is back to normal following a road traffic collision yesterday (Monday).
Westgate, on the one-way system, was closed for several hours after a Citroen C4 came off the road and collided with Great Northern Court, a block of flats.
The driver, a 56-year-old man, is believed to have taken ill at the wheel. He was taken to Grantham Hospital by ambulance for immediate treatment before being transferred to Sheffield where he remains in a serious condition.
The collision happened just after 10.10am. Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after, with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue working on capping a gas leak. No-one was evacuated from the flats, nor were there any injuries to those inside.
Nearby roads were closed with traffic being diverted down Sankt Augustin Way. Lengthy traffic queues were reported during the road closure, which were eased when one lane by the scene reopened at lunch-time.
At 2.30pm, the road was fully reopened and the damaged wall of the flat affected boarded up.
