Museum re-opens for Jubilee
Grantham Mayor Ian Stokes re-opens Grantham Museum.
GRANTHAM Museum opened its doors for the first time in more than a year last week and will remain open on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer.
Volunteers who are running the museum following the withdrawal of funding from Lincolnshire County Council rolled up their sleeves over the past fortnight to get the museum open for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Currently on show are exhibits on Margaret Thatcher, the contribution of Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain, work from students at Isaac Newton Primary School and much more.
But large-scale improvements to the facility will not be forthcoming until the end of the year at the earliest.
Lee Bruce, of Grantham Community Heritage Association (GCHA) – the volunteer group which is now running the museum – said: “This is what we are achieving without all the grant money; this is just with elbow grease.
“The building is not in as good a condition as it could be, but we haven’t started the refurbishment yet.”
The plan is to open the museum from 10am until 4pm on Fridays and Saturdays over the summer, allowing children to enjoy activities during the holidays.
The museum will then close around September of major refurbishment work to begin.
In the meantime, GCHA is pushing to raise as much money as it can from every resource – from grant money to members of the public joining the membership scheme.
Mr Bruce said: “It’s about having exhibits that are important to the community. We can show how the town was and help give a sense of belonging.
“There are some fantastically interesting pictures and I don’t think anyone quite realised how much we had.
“But this cannot stay here unless we make the money to keep it open.
“The money we have been given by the county council will last about 18 months, so if we don’t raise money, we will have to shut it again.”
