SUITS worn by Grantham-born Margaret Thatcher have sold at auction for £73,125.

Seven outfits worn by the former Prime Minister in the 1970s, while she was Education Minister, were auctioned by auctioneers Christie’s in London yesterday (Monday).

One lot, a jade green wool suit worn on the day she was confirmed as Conservative Party leader in February 1975, fetched £25,000. The dress and jacket, designed by British designer Mansfield, was bought by an anonymous bidder in the room.

The remaining six outfits, each exceeding the individual estimates of £1,000-£1,500, were bought by an online bidder in South Korea.

The lots went under the hammer as part of Christie’s ‘London Sale’, a one-off themed auction held to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.
