Rippingale couple flee new home after welcome turns sour
A COUPLE were welcomed to their new home by a drunken neighbour attacking their front door with a metal pole.
The couple were moving into their house in Station Street, Rippingale, when they were approached by neighbour Valerie Swain, who invited them to her home for a drink. However, Swain became abusive and the victims left.
Not content with that, Swain followed the pair to their home and began knocking on their window and shouting before eventually being calmed down, the court heard.
The couple left their new home with the intention of moving more items in the following day, but, that night, a police officer was called out to the street after reports of a disturbance and found Swain, a single mum of three children aged 12, 10 and four, holding a metal bar.
However, it was not until the next morning when the couple returned to their home that they found their front door had been badly damaged.
Mr Wood, prosecuting, said: “The family were so put off by their introduction to this particular street that they did not follow through with the move.
“Perhaps you can understand why the introduction to Station Street had that affect on them.”
Miss Thompson, defending said Swain became upset after inappropriate behaviour was displayed towards her.
Miss Thompson added: “She accepts that her behaviour should have been dealt with in other ways. Her judgement was clouded by alcohol.”
Chair of magistrates Graham Harmon said: “Obviously there is a problem with your drink, but we will take a slight risk and give you a conditional discharge.”
Swain admitted criminal damage and was given a 12-month conditional discharge. She must also pay costs of £85.
