Rivercare volunteers pull 22 bags of rubbish from water

A large group of volunteers gave up their Saturday morning at the weekend to dredge the River Witham of discarded beer cans and bottles.

But there was some good news. For the first time in years, no shopping trolleys were found.

Rivercare Leader John Knowles said: “We had a fantastic morning with 18 volunteers turning up.

“We started at Bridge End Road and I thought ‘this is embarrassing, all these volunteers and there’s nothing to clean up!’.

“But by the time we had finished we had piles and piles of stuff - but it was just little things like cans and bottles.

“It’s the first time no shopping trolleys have been pulled out but, to be fair, the supermarkets are doing their stuff to stop it happening.”

Despite not finding any of the bigger items seen in the past - shopping trolleys, traffic cones, computers, etc - the volunteers still cleaned up enough rubbish to fill 22 bin bags.

John described the day’s work as a “magnificent effort” and is contemplating one more clean-up before Christmas.
