Ropsley LIVES first responders are given Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals
TWO first responders have been thanked for their dedication to saving lives by receiving the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals.
Suzanne Dean, of Gonerby Hill Foot, and Sally Sambrook, 42, of Ropsley, were awarded the medals in recognition of their service to LIVES as first responders. The voluntary role sees them attending medical emergencies, bridging the gap between an incident and the arrival of paramedics.
Suzanne, 49, said: “We didn’t know anything about it until we received an e-mail advising us that we had been nominated and successful in gaining the award. It is wonderful to think that we are appreciated and see it as a great honour to receive the Jubilee Medal.”
All first responders who have given five or more years’ continuous service to the scheme were put forward for the award. There are over 1,600 volunteers throughout the county, of which only 60 were eligible for the Jubilee Medal.
Suzanne, who works as school business manager at Ropsley Primary School, set up a first responder group in Ropsley in 2004, launching with seven volunteers. Only two volunteers remain, leading to a link being formed with a group based in Welby.
When not at the school, Suzanne responds from her home in Grantham, covering the Belton and Barkston area of town, although she can be called out to any part of Grantham or the surrounding area.
Since setting up the group, Suzanne alone has attended over 40 calls and assisted in many road traffic incidents, some of which have been whilst on holiday in different parts of the country.
She said: “When I come across an incident in another area of the country I have to respond as a volunteer and cannot use the LIVES equipment, but can still use my skills and expertise as a member of the public and assist as necessary.
“My latest out of area incident was near Perth, when we came across an accident that had just occurred - you just have to remain clam, assess the situation, rely on your training, and manage the incident until emergency services arrive.
“Its amazing how helpful other drivers will be, you usually just have to give them a task and they will help out too.”
