Just five hours into 2013 Grantham had its newest resident in Alfie Steven Towning, weighing 6lbs 9oz.

Little Alfie was born at 5.20am on New Year’s Day, a week premature at Lincoln County Hospital to mum Amanda Tinkler of Brittain Drive in Grantham.

Amanda said: “He was the second baby born on New Year’s Day at Lincoln. Another mum beat me by two hours!

“But it was nice because we got to watch the fireworks out of the window. It will be a nice thing to tell him about when he’s older.”

Amanda said she would have liked to have given birth at Grantham Hospital but it was not possible.

She said: “The service at Lincoln was really good. I had a problem with a bone in my pelvis so I had to go to Lincoln even though I would have preferred to have him here in Grantham.”
