Sexual assault allegation made by girl, 17, driven to Grantham Canal towpath

A teenager was allegedly forced into a car and driven to Grantham Canal towpath before being sexually assaulted, police have said.

The 17-year-old girl was approached by a man while walking past Wellies chip shop in Springfield Road, Grantham, at around 5.15am on Sunday. The man is said to have made threats and forced her to a car, described as an “old-style” black Corsa, parked in nearby Tilling Close.

He is alleged to have then driven the victim to the towpath and assaulted her, before returning her to the junction of Huntingtower Road and Springfield Road.

A 20-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with this incident. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who believes they saw this incident or the car that is allegedly connected to it at any point on Sunday in Grantham, to call them as soon as possible. Officers are particularly keen to trace a woman, who appeared to be waiting for a lift, who was seen in Springfield Road shortly after the victim was returned to the area.

Inspector Gary Stewart said: “The alleged incident is believed to be isolated and this type of crime is extremely rare in the town.

“We would urge anyone with any information to get in touch with our officers as soon as possible, either by calling 101 or by giving information anonymously.”

Anyone with any information can contact the Emerald Team at Lincolnshire Police by calling 101, or call independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
