A shop owner was so upset at the amount of rubbish left outside the front of her premises and the impact it was having on her business that she decided to close.

After shutting up on a day when she would normally be open, Sheila Rimmington of Sheila’s Cakes on Welby Street said: “There are so many bags and it stinks. It is awful for our business being a cake shop. I was nearly in tears.”

The Journal previously reported on the issues Sheila was having with rubbish left outside her shop, and despite compaints to both the resident concerned and the council, the problem - and bags - have continued to mount.

“It has been going on for a year and I have gone round to the council. I don’t know what else to do,” added Sheila.

The resident who lives above the shop, and who prefers to remain anonymous, said: “It is difficult because I don’t know where else to put it. We don’t have any bins and we can’t leave it outside our flat upstairs because it won’t be collected. I don’t really know how to fix it.”

SKDC’s waste and recycling service manager Keith Rowe said: “We are working with the tenants in this location and have advised them where rubbish needs to be placed before collections take place.

“They are following these instructions and we will continue to reiterate this message and monitor the situation in this area. Where we have flats over shops it is sometimes difficult other than to place the refuse out on the edge of their property on the street, so we ask residents to please only put out on the day of collection and as advised or they may be committing a fly tipping offence.”

The council are reminding residents to put out recycling and refuse by 7.30am on the day of collection. Councillor John Smith, portfolio holder for healthy environment, added: “We appreciate how the vast majority of residents put out the right bin at the right time.”

Bin collection days can be checked by entering your post code at www.southkesteven.gov.uk/bincollectionday or by calling 01476 406080.
