‘Striking’ sculpture will be unveiled at family fun day

A NEW sensory garden in Grantham’s Wyndham Park will soon be opened.

A family fun day has been organised by the Wyndham Park Forum and Groundwork Lincolnshire, the forum’s partners in the project, to take place on Sunday, July 25.

It will be a free event, from 11am to 3pm, with a variety of activities planned, such as sports challenges, a nature trail and the chance to make model boats and bird and insect boxes.

The highlight of the day will be the unveiling of the new sculpture, entitled ‘Isaac’s Apple’.

The sculpture was carved by artist Nigel Sardeson out of an old diseased tree which was destined to be felled. As it was a seedling from the original horse chestnut tree planted when the park opened in the 1920s, the forum was pleased to save the tree from being entirely removed.

Wyndham Park Forum secretary Elizabeth Bowskill said: “The contrast between the dark elm wood of the apple and the pale colour of the hand is very striking.

“We have been very pleased that people have come down each week to watch its progress.”

Funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Spaces programme made the regeneration of the park possible. The £45,500 paid for the commissioning of the sculpture and the sensory garden surrounding it.

Varying textures, smells and sounds were included in the plan, with the South Lincolnshire Blind Society consulted on the most effective plants and materials.
