Thatcher is not the only famous name from town
WHEN about to move from York to Grantham in the mid-80s to teach maths at the King’s School, I received one of two reactions from my friends.
It was either: “Oh, that’s nice, that’s where Margaret comes from”, or (more often) “I’m not going to speak to you again – that’s where she comes from”.
I was disappointed that nobody, not even my maths and science colleagues, asked: “So will you be teaching at Isaac Newton’s old school?”
Let’s hope that, following the excellent Gravity Fields Festival, Grantham will be less associated with its controversial politician and more with its world acclaimed genius.
