Trophy success for HMP Whatton
Award-winning garden at HMP Whatton.
HMP Whatton was judged by the Royal Horticultural Society to have the best gardens in its national prison garden competition.
The Windlesham trophy, named after the late Lord Windlesham, was presented on Friday to the prison, between Grantham and Bingham, by Michael Spurr, chief executive officer of the National Offender Management Service.
Governer Lynn Saunders said: “Prisoners and staff take great pride in the gardens and this award is well deserved.”
The gardens feature wildflower areas and a wildlife pond as well as formal gardens and areas to grow vegetables for use in the prison kitchen. The vegetables are fertilised by vegetable and garden waste produced by four ‘wormeries’ also on the premises.
Ms Saunders added: “Prisoners help to design and tend the gardens, supervised by the prison’s horticultural team. As well as providing purposeful activity and employment qualifications for the prisoners, the gardens create a pleasant environment for all at Whatton.”
The competition was created in 1983 after being suggested by Lord Windlesham, then chairman of the Parole Board, in order to promote a more active lifestyle within prison.
HMP Whatton had previously won in the 1990s but was unable to enter again until 2011 when they came third.
