Vulnerable defendant smashed cell glass at Grantham Police Station

THOUSANDS of pounds worth of damage were caused to a police cell after a man punched through glass.

Louis Woodward, 23, of Croake Hill, Swinstead, but now living in Church Street in Spalding, admitted criminal damage following an incident at Grantham Police Station on September 13.

Woodward was arrested by police investigating the disappearance and possible abduction of his girlfriend - she was found safe and well later that day - before being put into a special “vulnerable person” cell.

Marie Stace, prosecuting, said: “Whilst in there he became agitated and aggressive and punched the door causing the upper pane of glass to smash.

“It had quite a serious effect on the police as the cell could not be used.

“It could be up to a couple of thousand pounds to replace because it has to be specially made.”

Mr Spasojevic, representing Woodward, said his client was placed in the cell because of mental health issues and he became frustrated at how long he had been kept at the police station, from 10am until he was charged at 7pm.

Mr Spasojevic said: “Whilst in the police cell, knowing he had done nothing wrong, Mr Woodward punched the pane of glass.

“He had no intention to cause damage but damage was caused.”

Mr Spasojevic said Woodward has lost his job as a result of the incident.

Woodward was fined £75 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £15. He was spared costs as a result of losing his job.
