Watchdog responds to criticism

AN independent health regulator has revealed the hospital self-assessment system is to be toughened up following criticism in a BBC TV investigation.

A Panorama documentary highlighted how the process had allowed some trusts to rate themselves as performing well, when in fact they were failing in certain areas. Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was among the hospitals to come under fire.

The Care Quality Commission said it did not accept any assessment by a trust at face value and that from April 1, NHS trusts will have to register with the regulator for the first time, and must meet new essential standards of quality and safety.
