OLYMPIANS from Grantham are being asked to share their personal memories and memorabilia with the public.
The arrival of the Olympic torch is less than two weeks away and Grantham Museum is asking not just Olympians but anyone with a tie to the games to get in touch to help put on an exhibition showcasing the town’s Olympic connections.
Jayne Robb of Grantham Museum said: “I need the people of Grantham to help me to put on a display of Olympic artefacts. We want anything they have got in connection with their own personal history of the Olympics which they are prepared to let us display for the people of Grantham.
“I don’t care if it’s the guy who emptied the bins at Seoul ‘88 - we want Grantham’s Olympic heritage.”
Grantham people will not only get the chance to see the torch being carried through Grantham on Thursday, June 28, they will also be able to have their picture taken with it.
Grantham College student Tracey Lamb is running with the torch in Boston on June 27 and will be at Grantham Museum on June 28 with her torch.
Jayne Robb said: “People will be able to have their photograph taken with the torch for £2, with £1 going to the museum and £1 to help Tracey raise the £215 she needs to buy her own torch, the one she ran with, outright.
“Everyone is excited about the Olympic torch coming through Grantham but it will only be here fleetingly. If they head to the museum though, they will be able to actually have their photo taken with an Olympic torch.”
Other events will also be held at the museum, including the chance for children to make their own Olympic medals.
The Olympic torch runners will set off from Manthorpe Road at 3.42pm on June 28.
The route will head to Castlegate before turning up Avenue Road and along the High Street and Watergate before heading along Barrowby Road towards Nottinghamshire.
l Grantham Museum is open on Fridays and Saturdays and will also open for the Olympic torch visit on Thursday, June 28.
