WORKMEN at St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham have been able to enjoy one of the best views in the county while installing scaffolding at the top of the iconic spire.
Repairs are are being planned to the 277ft steeple after it was discovered that cracks had begun appearing in the stonework.
The damage has been caused by the deterioration of iron cramps designed to hold the stones in place.
A framework of metal struts has been installed inside the spire, and the next stage of the work will be to fit strong wooden splints outside the affected area.
The platform has been installed at the bottom of the damaged area.
Permanent repairs to the spire are expected to take place in the summer of 2013.
