A moving service commemorating the outbreak of the First World War was held at St Swithun’s Church in Long Bennington on Sunday.
Next day a vigil took place at the church, which included the Grantham Handbell Ringers. A specially composed piece of music by Mr Derry, based on The poem They Shall Not Grow Old, was sung by David Taylor. The Last Post and Reveille were played by two Salvation Army musicians and a poem called The Veterans was rendered by Derek Thirtle, who wore his father’s medals from World War One and his own medals from World War Two. Prayers were said for those killed, maimed, made homeless and bereaved in current conflicts around the world.
An exhibition in the church, including this impressive piece of artwork made by schoolchildren pictured, continues until Tuesday.
