The leader of a campaign group which fought to save Grantham’s maternity unit says the decision to close it today will cost lives.

Charmaine Morgan of SOS Grantham Hospital said she was angry at today’s decision by South West Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group to close the unit and move it to another town or city.

She said: “People will die as a result of this decision. We already know of at least one fatality as a result of a delay in getting pregnant women and their babies to hospital.”

Coun Morgan hit out at the commissioning group for insisting there was no demand for the service in Grantham.

She said: “Through our consultation we learned that pregnant mothers were not being offered Grantham Hospital as an option. A number had asked to give birth in Grantham and were refused.

“The whole decision is based on a lie that there is not a need.”

Coun Morgan also criticised the group for calling on more women to give birth at home.

She said: “It makes no sense at all. How can they say they are closing the maternity unit because it is not safe in the hospital without consultants there and then be happy to have them at home without a consultant and possibly without a midwife?

“It’s nonsensical and illogical.”

She added: “They are putting our babies’ and mothers’ lives at risk.

“It’s Russian roulette as to whether a baby is going to be okay or not.”
