MR George Victor Leverett, of Chelmsford Drive, Grantham, has died at home. He was 80.

Born in Peterborough, he moved to Grantham at the age of four with his parents, Vic and May, and older siblings.

He leaves Shirley, his wife of 53 years, having married in 1958 and made their home in Grantham. He was father to Susan, David and Sally, grandfather to Mark, Jenny, Alistair, Duncan and Pauline and father-in-law to Dave and Kim.

After leaving Grantham Boys’ Central School, he completed his apprenticeship with Aveling Barford, before entering into the Royal Air Force at the age of 21. He served for four years and spent two-and-a-half years serving at RAF Fayid in Egypt.

In 1955 he returned to Aveling Barford for a further 32 years. He spent the last seven years of his working life very happily as caretaker at St Mary’s Catholic School, Grantham.

Mr Leverett was a passionate sportsman and took part in many sports. Football was his first love and one at which he excelled, and through which he made many friends playing for local teams, in particular Grantham St John’s. He also played for the station team at RAF Fayid, travelling throughout Egypt, Malta and Cyprus to compete.

In later life he enjoyed art, Scrabble and indoor and outdoor bowls, where he also made many friends.

The funeral service was held at St Wulfram’s Church, Grantham, conducted by the Rev June Rowland, followed by cremation at Grantham Crematorium.
