MR George William Henry Bond, formerly of East Avenue, Grantham, and for the past five years of Newton House Care Home, Grantham, has died there. He was 89.

Mr Bond was born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, and was brought up on the Sandringham estate in West Newton, Norfolk.

He was the eldest of three children born to William and Mildred Bond and had two sisters, Marjorey (who predeceased him) and younger sister, Joan.

During the Second World War he was a gunner in the Royal Air Force and was stationed at Alma Park, Grantham, when he met his future wife, Doris on a blind date.

He and Doris married in 1946 and were together for 64 years until she predeceased him.

Mr Bond leaves his children, Maureen, Edward, Pat, Thomas and Margaret, his sister, Joan and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He left school aged 14 and worked in the gardens at Sandringham, for the royal family.

He had been a jockey in Newmarket, Suffolk, until he had an accident. He then worked at Bjorlows Tannery in Grantham, for 24 years until being made redundant when the factory closed.

His final employment was at Vacu-Lug Tyre Company, Grantham, from where he retired at the age of 65.

Mr Bond enjoyed going on holiday and days out with his family. He liked to take walks with his wife, Doris and the family dogs and he enjoyed visiting his family in King’s Lynn. He spent many hours in his garden, growing vegetables and flowers and it always looked lovely. He also liked to watch Grantham Town Football Club matches.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland, Burial followed in Grantham.

Other mourners included: Ruby Pickworth, Janet Warner, Kathy Rose, Sue McDonald, Rachel McDonald, Anna McDonald, Simone McDonald, Mr and Mrs Soar, Mr and Mrs Rock, Stefan Michnew, Mr and Mrs Bowers, Mr Eldred, Heather Morton, Elaine Drury, Irene Eldred, Sue Fyfe, Raymond McDonald and Annette Barker.

Funeral arrangements were by Robert Holland, St Catherine’s Road, Grantham.
