Mr Norman Charles Grass, of Barkestone le Vale, has died in Nottingham City Hospital. He was 82.

The son of Charles and Lilian, he lived in Barkestone le Vale all his life. He had three sisters, Joan, Doreen and Marjorie. Joan and Doreen have predeceased him.

When he left school he worked for the Stevens family as a joiner/builder.

In 1955 he married Evelyn and they first lived with his parents, before moving to the Swedish Houses in 1959.

He began work for William Roberts Builders in Bottesford in 1958, and he spent the rest of his working life there, receiving a gold watch when he retired in 1995. During this time he worked on church restoration and on various stately homes. He was a much valued and conscientious worker.

A regular attendee at Barkestone le Vale Church, he was a sidesman in 1963 and for 50 years he played a prominent part in the life of the church. He advised the PCC on much of the restoration work completed at the church and most days he cycled to the church to check that all was in order. With his great friend, Don Poyseer, they made sure the churchyard was immaculate, quietly helping without any fuss.

Mr Grass was very knowledgeable about the countryside and enjoyed attending the Meets and following the Belvoir Hunt.

He was a regular visitor to Norfolk, where he and his wife spent many happy holidays and made lots of special friends over the years.

The funeral service took place at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Barkestone le Vale, followed by cremation in Grantham. The services were conducted by the Rev Frederick Connell and Judith Wells.
