Mr R. Cole

Mr Robert Cole, of Bottesford, has died in Lincoln County Hospital. He was 78.

Born in Swallowfield, Berkshire, in 1934, the son of Alice and Hubert, he had an older sister, Phyllis.

He attended Woodley Grammar School, Reading.

In 1950 he began working for the Post Office Telecommunications. He met Marion at the Reading Telephone Exchange where they both worked; they were 15 and 16 years old respectively.

At the age of 18 he began his National Service in the Signals Regiment, serving in Kenya for 18 months.

He and Marion married in August 1955 and later had four children, Carol, Graham, Nancy and Brian. The family enjoyed picnics in the countryside and day trips to the seaside. Mr Cole was a keen gardener and grew vegetables and fruit to feed the family.

In their 50s they both enjoyed holidays around the world and they renewed their wedding vows in the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas in 2000.

The family lived in Berkshire until his retirement and then spent five years living in Pembrokeshire, where Mr Cole enjoyed walking and achieved his ambition to walk the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, a journey of 186 miles.

They moved to Bottesford in 1995 and he became a sidesman at St Mary’s Church, mainly at Evensong, which was his favourite service.

He and his wife were founder members of the U3A and formed the Vale Luncheon Club there.

They celebrated their golden wedding with a service at St Mary’s and a trip to visit the Taj Mahal.

Mr Cole was very content and intensely proud of all his family, which included his beloved grandsons, Jack and Tom and Sam and Ben.

The funeral service was conducted by Lay Minister,Judith Wells, accompanied by the Rev Dr Mark Smith, at St Mary’s Church, Bottesford. Private cremation in Grantham followed.

Funeral arrangements were by William Roberts and Sons, Devon Lane, Bottesford.
