Mr Walt Cecil Barber has died at his home. He was 82.

Mr Barber was born in Bourne, the was the youngest son of Robert and Elizabeth and brother to Win, Bob, Roland and Mavis.

He attended Somerby School and left at the age of 14. He began work as a mechanic and driver, where he gained experience with various employers before joining the Army to do his National Service in 1950. He served with the Queen’s Bays and the REME in Germany until 1952.

In 1953, Walt met June and they were married in 1956 at Barrowby Church.

Mr Barber began working for Chandlers in 1954 and apart from a short spell, he remained with them until his retirement in 1995. He started there as a mechanic, progressing to a salesman, sales manager and sales director.

He had numerous hobbies throughout his life, including sailing, where he sailed Enterprise dinghies at local and national level and world championships. He enjoyed squash and was an active member of Grantham Squash club in the 1970s and 1980s.

Mr Barber was a supporter of country sports and ran a shoot at Spanby for many years.

In 1984, he began taking flying lessons and earned his Private Pilot’s Licence in 1985.

He continued being at the controls until he retired in 2007. During this time he took part in air racing and travelled to France, Ireland and other parts of Europe.

After retirement in 1995, he became a member of Stoke Rochford Golf Club where he represented the Senior Team. He became Seniors’ Captain in 2003 and remained a member until his death.

He was a committee member of Grantham Aviation Society being sub-editor of the club’s monthly magazine.

Mr Barber enjoyed travelling and visited Canada, Australia, New Zealand and America, as well as travelling in Europe.

He was a real family man, enjoying time with his two children, Joy and Mike and his grandchildren, Mark and Andy.

The funeral service was held at St Wulfram’s Church, Grantham, conducted by the Rev June Rowland. Cremation followed.
