MRS Evelyn Hannah Kmieciak, of Cornwall Close, Grantham, has died. She was 88.

Born in January 1924, in Moretonhampstead, Devon, she lived her early years in Chagford, where her family ran a small hotel.

After leaving the village school, she found work as a “clippie” - bus conductress - for Devon General, based in Exeter.

In 1942 she met and married Polish airman, Franciszek Kmieciak, and subsequently followed his postings around the country during the Second World War years. Their daughter Halina was born in Swansea, and the family eventually ended up in Grantham, where Tony was born.

In 1953 Evelyn and Frank moved into a brand new council house in Cornwall Close, which became the family home for the next 59 years. She raised her family there, along with their families and all of their friends. It was open house for all.

As the children grew up she worked initially as a cleaner for a retired colonel, while dressmaking for all and sundry. This led to her employment in the clothing industry for 30 years until her late retirement.

Boredom set in and she became known as Mum-the-tea-lady, working at South Kesteven District Council.

Mrs Kmieciak continued with her dressmaking, and over the years she made many wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses and page boy outfits.

She had a bright, uncomplaining nature and will be missed by all who knew her.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by the Rev J. Bruce.

Family mourners included: Tony Kmieciak, Jayne Kmieciak, James Kmieciak, Claire Drake, Simon Robinson, Nic Robinson, Neil Robinson, Paul Robinson, Helen Heaney, Beckie Hardeman, Sarah Kmieciak-Thorpe and Justin Kmieciak-Thorpe.
