MRS Mary Birch, of Harlaxton, has died in Lincoln County Hospital. She was 90.

She was born in Garthorpe, Leicestershire, the eldest of six children. She had three brothers, Oscar, Harry and Den and two sisters, Dot and Daisy. Oscar and Dot both predeceased her.

The family moved to Thistleton, where she cycled to school at Market Overton, often with Oscar on her bike.

She stayed on at school assisting the teachers for a few months, hoping to become a teacher, but due to family circumstances she had to leave and go into domestic services.

The family moved to Wymondham and then onto Braunston, near Oakham, and it was while she lived here that she joined the Land Army in 1941, until her discharge in 1946. She was still in the Land Army when the family moved back to Garthorpe, and while on her duties she met Philip Birch. They were married under special licence as Philip was being posted abroad with the Army.

When her husband returned they lived near Waltham, until moving to Freeby, where she worked for Warner’s Dairy in Melton Mowbray. She then worked for Rover engineering group at Reasby, until her retirement.

She was married to Philip for 67 years and they had one son, Peter. She also has a daughter-in-law, Fee, and two grandchildren, Richard (married to Julia), and Vicky (married to Lee) along with five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Lucy, Amber, Alex and James.

Mrs Birch moved to Harlaxton to be nearer to her family.

She like music and dancing, particularly when she was young, and she also enjoyed making home made wine. In later years she like pottering about in the garden and trying different recipes for making chutney. More recently she liked doing puzzles, reading, and watching football and rugby on television.
