MRS Margaret Garrett, of West Avenue, Grantham, has died at home. She was 83.

Born in Chesterton, Stoke on Trent, in May 1928, she was the daughter of Jack and Margaret Wilkes. She had one brother, Frank, who has predeceased her.

She grew up in the Chesterton area, where she also attended school, and she had a very happy childhood.

When she left school she went to work in a large department store.

In 1945 she med Ted on a night out with friends in Newcastle. They married in 1949 and moved to Colsterworth, where they settled down. They had two sons, Malcolm and Lester. The family moved to Grantham in 1980 due to Ted’s job.

Prior to having her sons, Mrs Garrett worked at Ruston and Hornsby’s in London Road. She became a housewife between 1951 and 1965 and then went to work in catering at Stoke Rochford Teacher Training College. Her final job before retirement was at Preedy’s tobacconists on St Peter’s Hill.

She enjoyed retirement and devoted her time to helping with charity work for the late Dr Baumber’s Gifts organisation. She spent time running raffles and tombolas.

Mrs Garrett also took over the running of the Tiffany Club at the Church of the Epiphany, Grantham, and she arranged many bus trips for the members, her favourite outing was to Emmerdale Farm.

Her other interests included shopping, bingo, knitting and cooking. In November 2007 she had a stroke which left her bedridden and her husband cared for her at home with the help of family, carers and district nurses.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland.
