A large crowd gathered by the Orrery at 10am to celebrate the official opening, with South Kesteven District Council chairman Councillor Mike Cook leading the proceedings.
The Market Place and Westgate area were bustling throughout the day, with shoppers and families enjoying the festivities.
So busy was the market that one trader reported his best ever takings in a single market day.
SKDC chief executive Beverly Agass told the Journal: “It’s been really positive. It’s great that the community has got behind it.
“This is the first of many events we will hopefully have in the Market Place.”
Among the activities laid on for families by SKDC was an ice rink, bowling, a space flight simulator and a cookery demonstraton. Meanwhile, street entertainers meandering through the market kept the young and old alike laughing.
Mayor of Grantham Mike Taylor praised the work done to the area.
He said: “I think it’s great for Grantham and hopefully it will attract people from outside of Grantham.
“All I’ve heard is people saying they’re happy with the sculpture. It’s the people’s choice, not the council’s choice.”
Market traders joined in the fun, which followed a Halloween, Isaac Newton and Autumn Equinox theme, by wearing fancy dress costumes.
