Mrs Joan Girdham, has died in Avery Lodge Nursing Home, Grantham. She was 88.
Mrs Girdham was born in Nottingham, and lived with her parents and brother behind her father’s cobbler’s shop.
After school she became the first person in her family to attend university, gaining a degree in botany. Later she became a teacher, working in Burton on Trent and then later Kilkenny, Ireland.
For many years she marked O-Level papers, both from overseas and locally.
Mrs Girdham enjoyed gardening and making things. She enjoyed patchwork, she smocked dresses, hand made leather gloves and knitted Aran sweaters. She also loved singing and belonged to the Choral Society in Kilkenny.
In March 1948 she married Ron - a marriage that lasted 61 years until his death in December 2009. They had three children, Jane, Paul and Julian, later followed by five grandchildren, who she enjoyed spending time with.
Mrs Girdham and her husband moved from Ireland to Long Bennington in 1986.
The funeral service was held at St Swithun’s Church, Long Bennington, conducted by the Rev Harriet Orridge. Cremation followed in Grantham.
Family mourners included: Jane and Michael Keenan, Paul and Sharon Girdham, Julian and Tanja Girdham, Sarah and Josie Keenan, Oliver, Priscilla and Ella Girdham, Eric Broadhead, Michael and Emma, Ruth Girdham, Mary Easterbrook, Joe Morrell and Margaret Morrell.
Other mourners included: Susan Browne, Kerry Angeloni, Jessica Cross (Avery Lodge), Linda Reeves, David Wild, Jim Wild, Pat Ullman, Noel Brownhill, Valerie Richardson, Jean Higgs, Pam and Tony Cudd, Jeanne and Raymond Lambert, Philip Bewley, Anne Lipsett, Rosie and Mitchell Fenton-Fearn, Nick Robinson, and John and Edna Cox.
Funeral arrangements were by William Roberts and Sons, Devon Lane, Bottesford.
Donations were received for St Swithun’s Church, Long Bennington.
