The Rev John Michael Flintham has died in Newton House Nursing Home, Grantham. He was 81.

His home was in the north Nottinghamshire/Mansfield area and he was educated in Warsop and Mansfield.

He began work at 16, erecting tv aerials, before serving three years in the Royal Air Force on radar installations.

For a time he was employed at the Electricity Board.

Mr Flintham was brought up with an Anglican background, but a friend invited him to a Methodist Church and he later became a local preacher and studied at Richmond Theological College from 1956 to 1959. He began his ministry in 1959.

During this time he met and married Dorothy and served in Cornwall, then Middleton in Manchester, Bottesford, and Norfolk. He was then superintendent at Ely and finally at Cinderford in the Forest of Dean before retirement, when they moved to Barrowby in 1998. The couple worshipped at Bottesford Methodist Church.

Their family by now included sons, Andrew and Matthew and daughter, Jane, followed by grandchildren Alice, Sophie, Maina and Elias.

During his time in the Bottesford circuit, Mr Flintham cycled around the 14 Methodist Churches in the circuit. He was always involved in the social activities such as pantomimes, art classes and music. He was a member of Grantham Music Club and in 1970, along with Joy Simpson, came up with the idea of art exhibitions at the church, in conjunction with the Vale of Belvoir Art Society, which still run today.

In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, cooking, music, reading and poetry.

The committal service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, followed by a service at Bottesford Methodist Church. Both services were conducted by the Rev Richard Tanner, and the Rev Peter Sulston.
