LEADER of South Kesteven District Council Linda Neal said she was “so pleased” that the heavy downpour did not put people off turning out for the very special occasion, after “months and months of hard work” by the council.
She said: “It was quite emotional, perhaps due to the fact that the weather had been so terrible before the torch arrived and yet people still stood in the street, even though they were soaked to the skin.
“It shows that people wanted to stay and be a part of it. There is a true Grantham spirit that proves that Grantham is a great town.”
Seeing the torch was a touching moment for Coun Neal, an avid follower of track and field sports.
She said: “It holds a special place in my heart.”
Coun Neal described the atmosphere in the town centre as “absolutely brilliant”.
She said: “Everyone was excited and we made sure that the children had a good a view as possible at the front.”
