Grantham Journal letter: Name is not linked to the old hospital

Letter

Letter

I really must correct the letter in last week’s Journal regarding the area name of Spitalgate (Spittlegate).

The name has nothing whatsoever to do with the Isolation Hospital on Gorse Lane. The name is much older than that, something like 400 to 500 years.

The name Spitalgate translates into the “Way to the Hospice” which was located on present day London Road, near to where the petrol filling station is located, approximately three quarters of a mile outside the then borough. That area was excavated and bones were discovered that had evidence of leprosy in 1991. This information can be found in various books or booklets on Grantham’s history.
