Poor judgement in choosing Mauritius as conference venue

RE: Head of Earl of Dysart School trip to Mauritius (Journal, June 22).

I am an International Educational Technology Consultant working in the EMEA region. I work for a very large international corporate company and am involved with many organisations such as iNET, government educational departments, BECTA and major educational bodies.Whilst I appreciate the need to help young people understand the world around them and to identify their strengths, weaknesses, within society and how fortunate they are compared with others for example from third world countries.

It is equally important that organisations who are considered to be leaders and instigators in innovation are sensitive to the world of education and parental perception especially in this current economic climate.

I speak on forums, with government heads and at conferences globally but none have been in such a luxurious surroundings as has been suggested by this article.

iNet is a recognised and well respected organisation whom I feel in this instance has not really considered the implications or ramifications of holding an important conference in such a venue.

I have no doubt that the agenda would have been demanding and a balance of work, networking and exchange of ideas and thoughts in an environment away from the usual school surrounds without the distractions would be beneficial but I do question the expense of such a meeting.

Maybe I sit on the fence with this one but I think that this is a really case of someone's poor judgment regarding location and cost for what should have been a straight forward and productive meeting within a limited budget.
