THE Grantham Journal is one of the town’s oldest and most revered local businesses - serving you since 1854.
For 50 of those years, a man described as a ‘genuinely old fashioned gentleman’ made it his business to keep the people of this town informed about all that was going on, through the pages of his beloved Journal - an organ that he went on to proudly edit for 17 years.
Fred Goodliff, 90, passed away on Tuesday. His passion for Grantham was unswerving, and indeed, the Journal itself would not be what it is today but for his dedication and commitment. For his contribution, we are immeasurably grateful.
The same can be said of Grantham Town Football Club, which will forever hold a place in its heart for Fred - former chairman of the club.
Scores of tributes and acknowledgements have arrived at the Journal through Twitter, Facebook, email and the like.
One seemed to sum up the respect for Mr Goodliff as well as any other. Jon Barnes said: “A really genuine and decent bloke. RIP, Fred.”
Another said: “What Fred didn’t know about Grantham wasn’t worth knowing.” And that was certainly true.
RIP Fred Goodliff. And thank you.
