VETERANS gathered in Grantham to mark Armed Forces Day, joining many others all across the country.

Dressed in their finery, the ex-servicemen joined together by the war memorial in St Peter’s Hill on Saturday to pay their respects to fallen comrades, before laying down a wreath.

Allan Spick, of Great Gonerby, was one of those gathered by the memorial.

He said: “It’s important to have these kinds of events in Grantham. We shall not forget.”

Soldiers from the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks joined the veterans in paying their respects.

Although the official city hosting Armed Forces Day was Edinburgh, parades and parties took place all over the country.

Meanwhile, a flag was raised outside South Kesteven District Council chambers last Monday.

Reading ‘Armed Forces Day, Show your support’, the flag stayed raised until the big day itself on Saturday.

Several civic dignitaries were present as the flag was hoisted up the pole.
