WYNDHAM Park in Grantham could soon become recognised as one of the country’s finest parks.

With the help of a community forum, South Kesteven District Council plans to submit an application for a Green Flag award, the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK.

Wyndham Park Forum chairman John Knowles said: “Winning the award would mean that Wyndham Park was recognised as being amongst the best in the country.”

In order to achieve the prestigious mark the community must get involved, so the forum is urging the people of Grantham to get behind it and fill out an online survey.

Forum secretary Elizabeth Bowskill is urging people to “participate in this important piece of community work”.

She added: “Achieving a Green Flag Award would provide Wyndham Park with the recognition it deserves as a wonderful green open space in an urban environment. The park has many positive attributes and the wish of the Wyndham Park Forum is to maintain those aspects which are a benefit to the users, to make improvements where necessary and to reflect the public’s aspirations for the park as a whole.”

Surveys have also been delivered to nearby King’s School and Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School, as well as Cliffedale and Belton Lane primary schools.

Also as part of the process, judges will visit the park to assess it against strict criteria. If they like what they see and are impressed by the involvement of Grantham’s community, Wyndham Park could be put on the map alongside the 1,200 award-winning parks and green spaces in the UK.

An SKDC spokesman said: “We hope people will take this opportunity to have their say and help us achieve the Green Flag Award.

“Wyndham Park is one of the town’s principal parks, used by the community 365 days a year to fulfill a broad range of community recreational requirements.

“The information we gather through the consultation process will provide us with a consensus of public opinion that will enable us to ensure that the park and its facilities meet the needs of visitors.”
