AS the festive holidays approach, many people in Grantham will be busy embarking on last-minute shopping trips, putting up decorations and planning exactly how they will fit in all those visits from family and friends.
And as Christmas creeps ever closer, it would be easy to put off donating blood as your normal routine goes out the window and everyone starts to wind down for the big day.
However, there will be no such wind down in the demand for blood from sick and injured people in local hospitals. Indeed, those receiving treatment for illnesses like leukaemia and haemophilia, or emergency patients and people undergoing surgery, need transfusions just as much as they do at any other time of the year.
Additionally, the snow and ice which we often see at this time of the year can lead to sessions being cancelled and deliveries of blood being disrupted, making it even more important to keep healthy stocks in reserve.
As a result, here at NHS Blood and Transplant, we are asking people to make a particular effort to give blood this Christmas.
We need your help to ensure there is enough blood for those who need it throughout the festive season, whatever the weather throws at our region.
We have a number of sessions taking place in and around the Grantham area over the coming weeks – you can find out which one would be the most convenient for you, quickly and easily, by either going to www.blood.co.uk or calling 0300 123 23 23.
May I also take this opportunity to thank everyone in Grantham who has donated blood over the past year and wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
