Hundreds of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment, The Poachers, are heading to Afghanistan next month.

The soldiers, who include a handful from Grantham in their number, will be based in Lashkar Gah, in Helmand province, where they will provide back-up for Afghan forces which have taken over day-to-day security of the area.
Their tour, which could last up to nine months, will coincide with Nato troops handing over security to the Afghan forces.
A parade and family day was held at Kendrew Barracks last Friday to mark the end of the soldiers’ training before they leave for Afghanistan. Commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Nigel Johnson said: “There’s a bit of apprehension before we go out but they know they are ready for the job and I’m sure they’ll be successful.”
