FUND-RAISING for Grantham Senior Citizens’ Club got off to a flying start recently when the members received a £6,000 cheque from Community Care for the Elderly.
They are hoping to use the money to put towards the total refurbishment of the club building in St Catherine’s Road, Grantham, as well as new equipment.
Club secretary Ted Foxall said: “We need to raise about £150,000 altogether to carry out all of the work. We know it’s a lot of money to find, and we are actively seeking funding from anyone that will help us.”
As well as accepting donations, the senior citizens have also been organising fund-raisers such as rummage sales and Tombolas to help raise some cash.
At the moment there are about 40 members in the club, which meets on average three times a week, but more people are joining all the time.
Anyone over 60-years-old, who lives within 20 miles of Grantham, can join for just £6 per year.
Ted said: “The club is now growing again after a lull in activities and is run by a volunteer committee – ‘Pensioners for Pensioners’ – under the chairmanship of Dave Bottomley.
“We want the club to expand.”
The members currently use the facilities on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but the building is available for use by other organisations. They hope to do more when the improvements to the hall are complete.
Dave added: “The club is good for meeting new people and generally getting together.”
The members get on so well they even organise day trips together. The next one is to York on July 26.
