Short-term reprieve for day centre is little help to parents

A VALUABLE day centre in Grantham used by more than 60 vulnerable people will close, Lincolnshire County Council has announced.

St John’s Day Centre is a facility for people with learning difficulties and Down’s Syndrome.

Lincolnshire County Council plans to withdraw funding for the day centre, along with 30 other across the county, within the next two years. The council to find private organisations to take over the running of the day centres.

Sidney Simpson of Dysart Road regularly takes his son Martin to St John’s.

He said: “The kids that go there, it’s their way of life. What’s going to happen to them? Nobody seems to know.

“I’m pleased it’s not an immediate closure but I think the two years was always their plan. I think they are trying to con the public into thinking it’s good news.”

Coun Graham Marsh of Lincolnshire County Council said: “We said at the start that nothing was off the table and are now pleased to be pressing forward with plans to keep the buildings open, which users told us they wanted.”

The council has set aside £500,000 to help those wanting to take over a centre.
