Monumental marrows and cracking carrots were among the stars of Harrowby Horticultural Show, held on Bank Holiday Monday.

Organised every year by George Harrison and Alan Skelton, the show attracted 30 exhibitors showing 260 entries of vegetables, fruit, flowers and sweet treats.

Mr Harrison 73, said: “The number of entires were down due to the weather, but we were still satisfied overall. The dry weather affects the produce, and the rain over the past few days affects the flowers.”

Several youngsters took part this year, the youngest aged eight.

Mr Harrison said: “The younger ones come along and they say ‘crikey, I wouldn’t mind growing something that big’. They’re fascinated.”

Mayor of Grantham Ian Selby was a special guest, and was asked to present the trophies to the winners.

He said: “It really was a super event, undertaken in a very friendly and spirted atmosphere. The quality of the flowers and produce was exceptional.”
