THE hugely successful South Kesteven Cultural and Olympic Tour has completed its tour of all the schools in the district with the final torch ceremony taking place at St Anne’s Primary School in Grantham.

The tour started on February 20 in Billingborough and visited schools across the district, ending last Thursday.

It is estimated that 20,000 young people have seen the torch and many have been inspired to live the Olympic and Paralympic values, have tried Paralympic sports and participated in many Olympic-related activities.

Vincent Brittain, CEO of sports charity Inspire+, said: “It’s hard to believe that our Cultural and Olympic tour will last longer in duration than the London 2012 Torch Relay!

“I would like to pay tribute to all the schools for fully embracing this tour, with many schools spending the day they hosted the torch engaging pupils in Olympic and Paralympic activities.

“It has been a truly unique and inspirational initiative.”

South Kesteven District Councillor John Smith added: “South Kesteven District Council is delighted with the success of the Cultural and Olympic Tour. With over 20,000 young people involved in some way with the tour we hope that many will be inspired to either continue or increase their involvement with arts and sport.

“This entirely supports the council’s priority to promote leisure, arts and culture within our district.”

Inspire+ and SKDC are already planning an Olympic Legacy Tour that will again be led by schools young ambassadors across the district.
