Opulent is a business formed in September 2015 as part of a national competition which Young Enterprise (YE) runs.

YE is the UK’s leading charity which empowers young people to develop personal and business skills. The company is owned and run by Sixth Form students at KGGS.

Opulent makes and sells handmade luxury reed diffusers made from almond oil and essential oils, which are completely alcohol free.
Opulent’s three current scents are fresh linen, vanilla and lemongrass, but we also sold cinnamon and apple in the run-up to Christmas. The product is non-toxic, so safe for any home - even those with pets and small children.

Our choice of an alcohol-free product, and our resulting Unique Selling Point, was decided when our business advisor (Lucy Heathershaw of Totemic, Grantham) told us that her choices of home fragrances were restricted by her sensitivities to products containing alcohol. We had to get our manufacture, branding and marketing underway with speed and efficiency for our first YE event. It was a test market at the Stamford Art’s Centre at the beginning of October, and here we won the Best Sales and Marketing award.

For the Christmas period we introduced cinnamon and apple in response to customer feedback at the test market, which proved to be a hit! We have been able to create a retail partnership with The Gift Box, a local shop located in the George Centre, and we are also stocked in CamperUK in Lincoln. We were able to let people know about our company via a conversation on the radio station LincsFM, which was very exciting, and this helped us to get the word out about our retail partnerships.

As the New Year arrived we decided to change our seasonal scent for lemongrass to reflect the coming springtime, and began to prepare for the South Lincolnshire area competition, held in Spalding. We won the teamwork award and progressed through to the County Final!

We continued to sell our line of reed diffusers, but decided to introduce a range of refill oils in order to develop Opulent further, allowing us to access a new aspect of the home scent market. In preparation for the Lincolnshire county YE final, we improved and practised our presentation and made final preparations for our trade stand. At the competition, we were nervous about learning about the products which the other teams competing had created, although we’re all incredibly supportive of each other and believe in our product and company, which meant we could enjoy the day no matter what the outcome would be. We are all thrilled that we won five out of eight awards that were possible for us to win. These were Best Presentation, Best Teamwork, Best Marketing, Best Health and Safety, and Lincolnshire Company of the Year 2016. As a result, we are through to the regional East Midlands final at Loughborough University on June 28!

We hope to expand further in the future, and would love to have Grantham’s support for the next round. If successful we would progress to the National final held in London.
