The fight against plans to close Grantham Museum

COUNCIL bosses in Lincoln plan to close Grantham Museum to save just £90,000 a year.

The figure was quoted by John Whittaker of Lincolnshire County Council, who is in charge of libraries and museums in South Kesteven.

Mr Whittaker has already begun planning for the closure of the museum and the use of the library to house a limited number of artefacts.

But many people in the town are not yet ready to give up the fight.

Grantham mum Anna Taylor sent in a letter from her eight-year-old daughter Sorcha this week.

Anna said: “Sorcha was devastated when she heard the news (in last week’s Journal). She loves the museum and the staff there are brilliant. The town has a lot of history and we should be proud of it.”

South Kesteven District Councillors are angry they were not given more warning about the proposals.

Only a limited number were invited to last week’s meeting in Lincoln - with council leader Linda Neal not even receiving an invite.

She said: “I would have liked to hear the proposals first hand but the leader was not invited and the first I knew about it was when councillor Mike Cook left the meeting and contacted me.

“It seems they were quite selective about who they invited.”

A full meeting of the district council will be held on Thursday (June 17) at 2pm where county council representatives will outline their plans.

The public will get the chance to put their views across at the beginning of the meeting.

If the museum closes a selection of items will be on display at Grantham Library ,and regularly rotated. Some of the artefacts currently stored at Grantham Museum will be put into storage at the museum, with the majority shipped off to Lincoln.

A Facebook group was set up this week called “Save Grantham Museum” which has already attracted almost 300 people in less than a week.

In Skegness an action group has been formed to help save their Church Farm Museum.

Incredibly, despite the axe looming, Grantham Museum is up for a People’s Choice Award this year.

Church Farm Museum, also under threat, has won the award for the past two years. To vote for Grantham Museum, log on to tinyurl.com/granthammuseum
