This is why council has altered bin collections

There have been a number of letters in the press following SKDC’s decision to reduce green/garden waste collections from a fortnightly to a monthly service during the winter months.

I wanted to address some of the concerns raised by residents.

A decision was taken to reduce our collections of green waste after listening to the views of residents obtained through extensive consultation carried out across the district during 2010.

From that feedback it was clear that residents preferred to see an increase in litter picking and street cleaning services rather than continuing with the fortnightly collection service which collects a relatively small amount of waste during the winter period.

This year we are benefiting from unseasonal weather which has meant that the leaves have fallen later, however we could not have foreseen that this would be the case and indeed is certainly different from previous years.

We will be reviewing the timing of monthly collections next year to see if this can happen later in the season.

My final point concerns the publicity of these vital changes. Collection calendars were published in our autumn edition of SKtoday which is delivered to homes across the district.

Adverts were placed in the Stamford Mercury, Bourne Local, Grantham Journal and Grantham Citizen and all of the information regarding the changes has been and will continue to be available on the council’s website at www.southkesteven.gov.uk.

However in the future we will consider the use of more direct communications like leaflets on bins for any significant change to collection arrangements.
