AN iconic tandem bicycle above a cycle shop in Grantham has been damaged, to the disappointment of passers-by.
Almost a dozen people have popped into Cyclesport, in London Road, to ask why the n bike, which has hung above the shop for over 20 years, has been removed.
It was on Friday morning that shop manager Sue Power was alerted to the damage by a couple of boys from King’s School.
She said: “If we hadn’t have taken it down it would have fallen down, and it could have injured someone. We’re not sure whether we can repair it, it’s bent in two.”
Sue believes the bike was struck by a lorry on Thursday night. A barmaid in the Stagger Inn said she heard a bang at about 1.30am and looked out the window to see a white articulated lorry outside the shop.
If the bike is deemed beyond repair, Sue said she will find a replacement as it is a “big part of the town”.
She said: “We’ve had customers coming in asking if we’re refurbishing it this year and asking why Santa isn’t on it this year.”
l Anyone who witnessed a white articulated lorry hit the tandem, or who knows what happened to it, is asked to call police on 0300 111 0300.
