CHILDREN from Charles Read Academy have spent the past month learning to be firefighters at their local fire station in Corby Glen.

The Year 8 and 9 pupils have been learning on a Fire Service Skills Course alongside firefighters who have more than 30 years’ experience.

Each week, the Year 9 fire cadets were put through their paces on a course which mirrors that of the first stages of fire officer training, learning about hoses, breathing apparatus, ladder work and more.

At the end of the course, the students took part in a passing-out ceremony at the fire station in front of proud parents and members of staff from the Charles Read Academy.

Teaching assistant Lisa Darrow said: “It has been wonderful to witness these young adults working together with maturity and respect.

“They have been inspired by the professionalism and I sincerely believe that they have gined a positive experience of working life; one which they will often draw upon and remember fondly.”
