Fond memories of the ‘big house’

Have your say

I WAS really surprised and upset when I read in the Journal that the Shirleycroft Hotel is to be demolished. For heaven’s sake why?

I don’t know how historic the building is, but I do have lots of fond memories of it. I was born in Stuart Street back in 1928. Shirleycroft was not a hotel then, of course, but the private residence of Mr and Mrs Marsland. When the war came the Marslands moved out when it was requisitioned by the Air Ministry and turned into a hostel for the WAAFs.

Although I no longer live in Grantham I like to keep up with what’s going on there through the Journal, and I hope I never see the report that Shirleycroft has been demolished.
