Grantham Journal letter:

As a very new resident to Grantham (arrived end of March), I went to the first meeting where I had an opportunity to see my local MP and county councillor at work.

Yes, I will admit to being a Conservative, I will also admit to having cast my first vote for the Lady of your town, albeit in Sussex.

So, cards on the table, I never read the Telegraph (why read the truth when you can so enjoy the misinformation of the Guardian and Mirror, which gives me so much to use against the money-grabbing, control-freaking Labour Party?)

The debate was led from the floor. Of course there could be more people, but who of us has organised a school fete only to feel sad that the numbers don’t arrive? Yet just as a PTA chairman or school governor, you don’t give up, you fight for the few because the masses follow.

I must say that in fact there were many occasions where Nick Boles tried to steer away from the faithful, but each person there had the same issues - HS2 and potholes. As a Sussex guy, I laugh at your potholes - you ain’t seen nothing like the ones I left behind. As for the train - here again having come from the South East - honestly, you would welcome anything which gave you better transport links.

Of course I know nothing of your people services or such like - I am frantically learning because I will be there soon, but let me say one thing - for all the faults, which of course there are many - you have an MP who took part in a free for all with no agenda and a county councillor who did not always agree but a debate with free speech was heard by all who attended and we should just remember the people all over the world who would be shot for speaking against their leaders. On the week of her majesty’s Official Birthday, I felt proud to be British and I support all parties of whatever colour for defending my freedom.

Oh, and I must end on a high, Peter Clawson is right - the fish and chips were fab.
